Dr. JJ Saenz, Dr. JJ Saenz, Jr. and Dr. Jennifer Saenz are incredibly proud of the family-run practice they have worked hard to establish. All born and raised in the Rio Grande Valley, it was important to them to come back to the community they so deeply love so they could care for the Valley’s children.
Born and raised in the Rio Grande Valley, Dr. J.J. Saenz has been treating patients at Pediatric Center at Renaissance since 1979. After completing his undergraduate studies at the University of Texas at Austin in 1971, he continued his education and received a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy. Dr. Saenz obtained his medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas in 1976. He then completed his internship and residency programs with Baylor College of Medicine Affiliated Texas Children’s Hospital, Jefferson Davis and Ben Taub Hospitals in Houston.
From 1986 to 2003, he was an Associate Professor for the University of Texas, San Antonio Residency Program.
Dr. Saenz is a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Texas Pediatric Society, member of the Executive committee of the Baylor College of Medicine Alumni Association and the University of Texas Alumni Association. He is currently the Medical Director for the McAllen ISD Health Program for yearly Standing Orders, as well as a member of the Quality care and Peer review committee at the Doctors Hospital at Renaissance (DHR).
Dr. Saenz has served as chief of Pediatrics at McAllen Medical Center Hospital, Rio Grande Regional Hospital and Doctors Hospital at Renaissance. He was the 2011-2012 Baylor College of Medicine Alumni Association president. He sits on multiple committees at DHR and is on the Board of Directors for the Physicians Health Plus
While Dr. Saenz no longer sees patients in clinic, he is still very involved with the practice. He is the supervising physician for the PAs and is the Chief Financial Officer. He is also very active in the nursery at Doctors Hospital at Renaissance, bringing in new newborns into the practice.
After graduating from McAllen Memorial High School in 1999, Dr. Saenz attended Duke University where she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, a minor in Spanish, and a certificate in Human Development. After her Duke graduation in 2003, she completed her post-baccalaureate program at Barry University in Miami Shores, Florida. Dr. Saenz received her Masters of Art degree from the Graduate Medical Sciences Department at Boston University School of Medicine and then attended medical school at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. Her three year residency training in pediatrics was completed at Baylor College of Medicine/Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston, Texas in May of 2016. That July, Dr. Saenz joined her father Dr. JJ Saenz at Pediatric Center at Renaissance and serves in both administrative and clinical capacities.
Dr. Saenz is a busy mother of two, a daughter and a son. In her spare time, she enjoys working out and creating memories with her family.
Dr. Juan Jorge Saenz, Jr. graduated from McAllen Memorial High School in 2002. He then attended the University of Texas at Austin and obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology. Following his graduation from UT in 2006, Dr. Saenz attended post-baccalaureate programs at Barry University in Florida and St. Mary’s University in San Antonio. Dr. Saenz earned his medical degree from The University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas in 2017 and completed his pediatric residency in Phoenix, Arizona in 2020. In September 2020, Dr. Saenz joined his father and sister at Pediatric Center at Renaissance.
In his spare time, Dr. Saenz enjoys hunting at the family ranch as well as fishing at South Padre Island. Additional hobbies include playing golf and tending to his herbs and chili plants.
Erica Tijerina is a Physician Assistant with over 15 years of experience in Pediatrics. Ms. Tijerina obtained her Bachelor of Science degree in Biology with minors in Chemistry and Psychology in 2005 from the University of Texas Pan American. She then obtained her Master of Physician Studies in 2009 from the University of Texas Pan American. She plays an integral part in her patients’ lives by coordinating care for specific conditions that require long term treatment and management. Her passion for children and their overall emotional and behavioral needs drive her to continue to learn and advocate for each patient and their families. She enjoys attending continuing medical education conferences and reading journals with up to date information on how to help her patients and to expand her knowledge. She hopes to continue to find ways to help her community but encouraging the early development of children in the Rio Grande Valley, as she knows they are our future.
Joaquin Garza is a Physician Assistant with over 10 years of experience in Pediatrics. He graduated from the University of Texas Pan American with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology in May of 2010. Mr. Garza then received a Masters degree in Physician Assistant Studies from the University of Texas Pan American in December of 2012 as the top graduate of his class. He provides medical care for patients ranging from neonates to adolescents. He has spent his entire career in the Rio Grande Valley and is driven to achieve complete and thorough care for his patients in his beloved community. He has been with Pediatric Center of Renaissance since March of 2019 and is honored to work alongside the Saenz pediatricians and his fellow PA Ms. Tijerina.
In his spare time, Mr. Garza enjoys fishing, cooking and reading about the latest advances in medicine.
